QMD Inc. was
founded in 1987. Our desire was to create time-saving software for the medical
profession which would also enhance the quality of care. The gathering of
patient historical information in a novel and efficient way was the first
challenge we considered.1
Our automated
medical history-taking product was sold from 1987 to 1992. In 1997 we embarked
on the development of complete record-keeping software for physicians; we
created a laptop-based medical record system for hospitalists.
With the
passage of time it has become apparent that the imposition of a simplistic
business model on medicine has failed. Quality of care has plummeted and costs
continue to rise. Private and public health insurance plans are threatened with
complete financial failure. State and Federal requirements for documentation*
have become more detailed and virtually impossible to fulfill . . . without a
sophisticated software system. Software solutions for clinical
problems are rarely ever seen. Yet, a significant degree of
"automation" is the single factor that can save health care at this
point in history. We are dedicated to introducing automation to the process of
patient care. With organization of data and ideas, satisfaction and profits
will return.

first automated interviewing system for medicine was developed by Warner Slack,
M.D. in 1966. Dr. Slack is an emeritus professor at Harvard University.
